About Cashmere
Cashmere "wool" is actually Hair of a Cashmere goat. The ultrafine hair that's used in cashmere sweaters is the super-soft, insulating undercoat around the neck of a Cashmere (Kashmir) goat, pashmina goats and some other breeds. All these goats are inhabited in China, India, Iran, Afghanistan and Iraq. Collecting these particular fibers is a laborious by-hand task during spring molting season in a small yield. The difficulty involved with collecting cashmere wool explains why it is relatively rare and luxury item compared to sheep’s wool. It takes at least 2 goats to make 1 two-ply cashmere sweater, whereas the wool from 1 sheep can make 4 or 5 conventional wool sweaters.
